About the Position:

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

The Assistant Secretary interacts daily with Business Recruitment and In-State deal development teams to assure success in the state’s Foundation for Growth to grow the economy, improve wages, and widen the industry mix of the state’s economy.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides oversight, management and direction to all Business Recruitment and In-state recruitment programs and staff. Establishes performance expectations and priority outcomes, evaluates performance, provides employee counseling and guidance, and assigns work. Makes recommendations that carry particular weight to appointing authority with regard to hiring, disciplinary actions and terminations. Assists with the preparation of the annual budget for the division. Formulates strategies for achieving the section’s annual goals

  • Develops a process for tracking win rates, deal flow and industry trends to achieve goals set forth in the Kansas Framework for Growth. Collaborates with local Kansas economic development organizations to ensure that Commerce RFP responses exceed expectations. Promotes the extensive range of state incentive programs. Serves as an advocate for Kansas by encouraging clients to visit communities and make on-site inspections of properties and resources. Promotes community assets throughout the state by representing the agency at events, tradeshows, conferences and other activities.

  • Works in partnership with Team Kansas and Commerce’s marketing team to deliver compelling events that attract active site selectors, CFOs and CEOs interested in learning more about Kansas’ value proposition.


Minimum Qualifications: Licensing & Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Marketing or related field

  • Ten years’ experience in a business development role

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in delivering or working with economic development programs

  • Must have the ability to travel up to 25%

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Business Administration a plus

  • Megaproject experience a plus
