Position Title: Controller

Department: Finance & Accounting

Reports to: President

Category: Exempt

Purpose of Position
The Controller will be a strategic thought-partner who leads and develops an internal team to support the following areas: accounting, business planning and budgeting, business development, human resources and administration. The
Controller will play a critical role in partnering with the senior leadership team in strategic decision making and operations as Anawim Housing continues to build capacity.

Essential Duties
Finance & Accounting

  • Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; collate financial reporting materials for all companies, and oversee all project, program and fund development accounting.
  • Lead the annual audit process and proper filing of tax returns.
  • Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the President; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status.
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.
  • Implement a robust contracts management and financial reporting system; ensure that the billing and collection schedule is adhered to and that financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements.
  • Update and implement all necessary business policies and practices.
  • Effectively communicate and present the critical financial matters to the

Board of Directors.

  • Oversee the accounting department to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and appropriate internal controls and procedures.
  • Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for federal and state funders, foundations, investors and the

Board of Directors; oversee the preparation and communication of monthly and annual financial statements.

  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.


  • Develop financial business plans and forecasts.
  • In collaboration with the senior leadership team develop annual property development options.
  • Support the Director of Property Development in pro forma creation and underwriting process of projects from concept through completion.
  • Participate in corporate policy development as a member of the senior leadership team.
  • Engage the finance committee of the board of directors to develop short-, medium-, and long-term financial plans and projections.
  • Represent the company to financial partners, including financial institutions, investors, auditors, public officials, etc.
  • Remain up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.

Strategic Development

  • Implement the processes and procedures necessary for continuing the development of Anawim Housing’s property management growth. Work directly with property owners to understand the financial needs and the role of Anawim Housing.
  • Develop strategies and financial models to support continued property development.
  • Maintain internal controls as Anawim Housing’s programs & services and fund development activities continue to expand.

Internal Customers

  • President – reports to and consults with President.
  • Anawim Housing Staff Members – continually interacts with all staff members by providing leadership, motivation and direction as well as answering procedural questions and assisting in interpretation of policies.
  • Senior Leadership Team – provides information necessary for balancing departmental budget.

External Customers

  • Tenants: ensure the highest level of client service through positive interaction.

Provide appropriate oversight to tenant information, deposits and other financial records.

  • Financial Partners: maintains positive working relationships with lenders, investors and other key financial partners including City, County and Federal funding sources to ensure proper accountability.
  • Strategic Partners: serve as the liaison for all financial matters in working with management and development partners.
  • Board of Directors: provide regular information about the financial condition of the organization and all subsidiary companies and provides a regular forecast to the Finance Committee.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of a BA in Finance or Accounting
  • Public accounting experience is preferred.
  • Previous business management and/or an MBA is preferred.
  • At least 7-10 years of overall professional experience; ideally 6+ years of broad financial and operations management experience.
  • Familiarity with tax credit financing, underwriting and compliance.
  • The ideal candidate has experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination for either a division or an entire business entity.
  • Ability to translate financial concepts to and effectively collaborate with colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds.
