Job Description :

Under direct supervision the Grants Writer is responsible for providing professional technical assistance in the following areas: Preparation and application submission of all Tribal grants, and coordination of Tribal program(s) development with the respective Program Directors, Administrators and/or Tribal Officers. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Business, Communication and/or Management Planning or other related area and three years’ experience in creating, writing and submitting grant/contract and/or community program development proposals; or a combination of education and experience.

  • Preference will be given to qualified Native Americans.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides coordination, administration and supervision of funded “orphan” programs, which are not specifically assigned to a Program Director.

  • Provides coordination and compilation of Tribal demographic area, statistics and resource information as it relates to and for grant awards.

  • Prepares and submits for approval accurate grant/contract applications in behalf of the Washoe Tribe to Federal, State, County, and Private Funding Agencies.

  • Coordinates all grant/contract applications with appropriate Program Directors, Administrators and/or Tribal Officers ensuring accurate documentation, compliance objectives and assurance of Tribal priorities and proposals.

  • Provides appropriate training relating to new and/or updated funding sources, procedures and on new or revised program development processes and procedures for appropriate Program Directors, Administrators, Tribal Officers and other staff.

  • Provides coordination and implementation of awarded grants/contracts.

  • Participates in the coordination, compilation, maintenance, distribution and direct utilization of Tribal demographic data, statistics and resource information related to grant funding and grant awards, and performs other related duties as required.

  • Seeks out any and all available funds, possible grants or other funding sources, which if applied for and awarded will benefit the services provided for the members of the Washoe Tribe.

  • Drafts annual development plans that include projected grant proposals under consideration for submission and by certain designated timelines.

  • Coordinates timely and accurate monitoring procedures of awarded grants insuring the compliance with the requirements established by Federal, State, County, Local and Private Funding agencies.

  • Prepares concise, accurate and timely written and/or oral monthly reports to the Tribal Council and Administration. Discusses, and when appropriate, negotiates terms of final grant proposals and/or settlements of award amounts.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications

  • General knowledge of the grant writing and compilation processes, including grant identification, writing narratives, development of budget documentation, scope of work/work plans, and other standard grant attachments.

  • Knowledge of traditional form of government and tribal customs and traditions.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county, and local laws, regulations, and requirements.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

  • Ability to create and present effective speeches and presentations.

  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.

  • Ability to make solid decisions and exercise independent judgment.

  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).

  • Skill in developing, writing, and submitting funding proposals.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands and fingers, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment

  • Work is generally performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level.

  • The Washoe Tribe of Nevada & California requires a background check of each new hire for employment purposes. Therefore, all conditionally offered positions will be subject to the following:

  • Obtain or possess a valid driver’s license for either the State of Nevada or California within 30 days

  • Must be insurable under the Washoe Tribe’s driving policy

Hiring preference is provided to members of the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California followed by members of other federally recognized tribes. Must pass and comply with the PL101.630-Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Protection Act. Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California requires any designated candidate to complete a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening, must possess a valid NV or CA. driver license within thirty (30) days of employment, (when applicable) and PL 101-630 Criminal / Character Investigation background check.
