Job Title: WIC Competent Professional Authority (CPA)

Reports To: WIC Nutrition Services Coordinator
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Full-Time
Schedule: Mon-Tues, Thurs-Fri 8am-5pm; Wed 9am-6pm
Wage: CPA: $20.48-$26.06 hourly; depending on number of years of transferrable experience and internal equity

SUMMARY: Works within the guidelines of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program to evaluate nutritional status and deliver current, evidence-based nutrition and breastfeeding education to WIC participants.

  • *ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Interviews participants regarding their health and nutritional status using motivational-style interviewing strategies. Interviews conducted in a culturally sensitive, empathetic, non-judgmental, and professional manner.
  • Collects, and records accurately, and according to Montana WIC guidelines, the demographic, financial, and health/nutrition data required to determine program eligibility.
  • Performs weights and measures of infants, children and women using standardized procedures.
  • Performs finger sticks to obtain blood hemoglobin, using Universal Precautions.
  • Documents data and nutrition assessments into WIC computer system in accurate and timely manner, and according to standards developed by State WIC Program and local WIC agency policies and procedures.
  • Assesses for, and assigns, the appropriate WIC-established Risk Factors to WIC applicants, to determine eligibility and nutrition education and referral needs.
  • Develops and documents participant care plans that includes goal-setting with the participant, future general nutrition education, referrals, and outcomes of these plans.
  • Provides general nutrition education and preventative health information to WIC participants using established standards and current, evidence-based resources, while taking into consideration the individual participant’s Risk Factors and goals.
  • Provides education and referrals that support public health goals, such as immunizations, prenatal care and breastfeeding promotion.
  • Provides knowledgeable breastfeeding support for mothers and infants. (Training provided).
  • Identifies when client needs are outside parameters of this job and scope of practice, and makes appropriate referrals.
  • Uses guidelines of the WIC Program, RiverStone Family Health Services, and Montana Medicaid guidelines in identifying High Risk participants who qualify for more comprehensive services such as Nurse Family Partnership, Parents as Teachers, and Maternal Child Health home-visiting, and following through with referrals to these programs.
  • Coordinates with the Family Health Services team to provide clients a comprehensive delivery of services.
  • Displays flexibility and teamwork while performing tasks, with the goal of exemplary Customer Service. This may include covering for other WIC staff, as needed, to maintain delivery of WIC services.
  • Maintains work and customer waiting areas in a manner that presents the program as welcoming, clean, sanitary and organized.
  • Ability to handle difficult customers and situations, both external and internal, with calmness and respect, using positive conflict management skills.
  • Maintains confidentiality and respects privacy of customers and clients at all times.
  • Accepts delegation of special tasks and projects under direction of supervisor.
  • Travels to outlying sites, as needed, and in all seasons, to provide WIC services. This includes driving a program vehicle as well as loading, unloading and movement of equipment and supplies.
  • Attends staff and program meetings and trainings as required. This may include occasional out of town travel.
  • Successful completion of assigned training.

QUALIFICATIONS to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Applicant must have a 2 or 4 year degree in a health-related field (such as Nursing, Health Promotion, Health and Human Development, Early Child Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, et.al.) The degree course work must include 6 or more semester hours in foods and nutrition appropriate to the WIC population (including Basic Nutrition, Nutrition in the Life Cycle, Community Nutrition, or Nutrition and Disease).
  • Applicant must have successfully completed a college-level Anatomy and Physiology series of coursework within the past ten years (unless Applicant has been working in the Nutrition field).

CPA In Training Criteria:

  • Other degreed professionals with 12 or more semester credit hours in foods and nutrition, and successful completion of the Anatomy and Physiology coursework, may be considered. This coursework can be completed within the first year of employment during CPA training.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid State of Montana Driver’s License in good standing.
  • Required to obtain emergency preparedness on the job training at a minimum of ICS 100, 200, and 700.
