The Boise City Attorney’s Office is currently seeking applications for a
Paralegal I
position. We are looking for highly motivated candidates with strong communication skills who will enjoy working in a team-oriented setting.

This position:

  • Performs paraprofessional legal work to assist attorneys by preparing and maintaining complex civil litigation case files
  • Stores, organizes, and locates documents, records and files using electronic case management and document management software
  • Reviews drafts of legal pleadings to ensure legal sufficiency, content accuracy, and correct grammar, punctuation and formatting
  • Independently drafts answers, discovery, motions and other pleadings for attorney review
  • Collaborates with attorneys and staff to manage a large volume of subrogation cases
  • Follows up on assignments delegated to attorneys and staff; identifies project goals and milestones, sets and manages project schedules, processes a high volume of public records requests in compliance with the Public Records Act under the supervision of an attorney
  • Provides general administrative support to the Municipal Section of the City Attorney’s Office

Essential Functions

Prepares and maintains civil case files; uses standardized forms and templates to draft agreements and other legal documents; drafts proposed ordinances, resolutions, policies, and rules, and independently review drafts of proposed ordinances, resolutions, policies, and rules to ensure legal sufficiency, content accuracy, and correct grammar, punctuation, and formatting; stores, organizes and locates documents, records, and files using electronic case management software, document management software, legislative workflow software, and document database software; develops, implements, and refines workflows and procedures for legislation, contracts, agreements, and other documents. Coordinates third-party and Boise City officials’ signatures on agreements and other documents; follows up on assignments delegated to attorneys and staff; identifies project goals and milestones, sets and manages project schedules, and assists with project-related problem solving; independently manages and maintains all documents related to subrogation cases, and collaborates with attorneys and staff to manage a large volume of subrogation cases; drafts, files, schedules. Manages housing evictions; represents the City in small claims court; assists attorneys in magistrate and district court collection matters; initiates and pursues collection of delinquent debts owed to the City; tracks bankruptcy, estate, and probate cases affecting City collections; perform research, including skip tracing, to locate debtors; under the supervision of an attorney, processes a high volume of public records requests in compliance with the Idaho Public Records Act and other applicable state law; processes property and weapons dispositions using applicable statutes, rules, and case law governing police evidence; creates complex legal training presentations; coordinates real property transactions; notarizes documents; files pleadings with courts. Submits documents for recording in the official records of Ada County; provides general administrative support to the Civil Section of the City Attorney’s Office; serves as the initial point of contact within the Civil Section of the City Attorney’s Office for inquiries from members of the public, businesses, and outside organizations, and directs written correspondence and telephone calls to the appropriate person within the Civil Section of the City Attorney’s Office; is the primary point-of-contact for City employees seeking documents in the custody of the City Attorney’s Office; coordinates the briefing schedule and filing for all criminal appeals, and independently reviews appellate briefs prepared by an attorney for content accuracy and correct grammar, punctuation, and formatting; performs legal and factual research at the direction of an attorney; and other duties, responsibilities, and special projects, as assigned. Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

  • Bachelor’s Degree in paralegal, legal assisting, or pre-law studies, or a paralegal Associate’s Degree
  • 4 years of experience in criminal or civil law, legal case management, legal research and writing, or assisting attorneys
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Ability to:

  • Accomplish specific assignments as directed by an attorney
  • Use initiative, coordinate complex projects, and appropriately prioritize a heavy workload
  • Compose court documents, proposed ordinances and resolutions, and general correspondence
  • Use proper spelling and grammar
  • Read, understand, and follow policies and procedures
  • Operate a computer with demonstrated proficiency using a database, word processing, and spreadsheet software applications at an appropriate level for efficient job performance
  • Conduct research and prepare reports and correspondence at a high level
  • Display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public, and other organizations
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • Complete assignments in a timely fashion
  • Understand and comply with all laws and City rules, policies, and regulations
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training

  • Bachelor’s Degree in paralegal, legal assisting, or pre-law studies, or a paralegal Associate’s Degree
  • 6 years of experience in criminal or civil law, legal case management, legal research and writing, or assisting attorneys
  • Experience researching and interpreting complex regulations, policies, ordinances, statutes, laws, and codes
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Licensing And Other Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

Special Requirements

Applicants must be able to pass:

  • City of Boise background check processes includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation
  • Driving Record Check
  • Criminal Justice Information System background check (CJIS)
