Job Description :

Sappi Somerset is among the largest paper mills in North America, producing over 970,000 metric tons of graphics and board paper and 530,000 metric tons of pulp each year. The mill began as a greenfield pulp mill in 1976, supplying fiber for Scott paper tissue mills. The first of three state-of-the-art coated paper machines was installed in 1982, with subsequent machines installed in 1986 and 1990. Significant reinvestments over the years has maintained Somerset’s edge on technology and also to branch out from traditional graphic paper into SBS board grades with the rebuild of PM1 in 2018. The mill can also produce market pulp based on fiber balance, and continues to push for world class status in the realms of safety, quality, and productivity.

Position (job title): Senior/Technical Specialist

Work Site: Mill Somerset

Somerset is currently looking for an experienced process engineering specialist with a focus on process and quality improvement activities in the pulp and paper areas of the mill. This position is for an individual knowledgeable in pulp and papermaking processes, and proficient with mill data systems, such as Process Book, Plant Applications, Excel, Braincube, and Minitab in order to support the technical and operations needs of the mill.

Performance Objectives

As a key member of the Technical Services Department, the successful candidate will:

  • Be responsible for leading and developing process engineers in the pulp and paper mill areas, managing process and lab resources to meet multiple demands.
  • Build a strong culture of continuous improvement; developing and implementing new process strategies, optimizing existing manufacturing processes, encouraging risk taking, and persuasive in implementing change to increase efficiency and achieve cost leadership.
  • Lead planning and implementation of trial processes, ensuring compliance to product development policies and guidance.
  • Maintain strong internal and external relationships, working collaboratively across organizational boundaries with R&D, Operations, Purchasing, Engineering, and Sales & Marketing to achieve results in the pulp and paper processes.
  • Proactively troubleshoot complex operational issues, identifying and implementing material changes and process improvements for problem resolution.
  • Possess strong analytical skills with a comprehensive understanding of analytical problem-solving methods, processes, and statistical data analysis systems for proper problem identification and resolution.

Entry Requirements

  • BS degree in Chemical Engineering or similar engineering degree
  • Ten or more years’ experience in pulp and coated paper manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills with a proven ability to implement change
  • Excellent communication skills, effectively communicating to a variety of audiences.
  • Green Belt certified, skilled in continuous improvement and Lean principles
  • Strong technical project management skills and process trial design experience

Salary is determined by a number of factors including the value of the job to the organization, market forces, internal equity and skills brought to the job.
