    Position: Therapeutic Support Counselor

    Location: William Penn High School

    State Date: as soon as possible

    Reports to: Principal/Director

    Compensation: Refer to current teacher salary scale on District website

    Work Year: 10 Month (Teacher Contract)


    To create and sustain an educational environment conducive to the fulfillment of the District’s Mission so that maximum positive impact on the education of children can be realized. The Therapeutic Support Counselor is intended to provide direct therapeutic support services to students and serve as a liaison to connect students and their families to relevant community-based resources as part of a comprehensive Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS).


    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:

    • Master’s degree from an accredited University or College in the field of Psychology, Social Work, Counseling or Human Services Field.
    • Licensed in the State of Delaware as one of the following: Clinical Social Worker, Mental Health Counselor, National Board Certified Counselor, or Professional Counselor.
    • Proficient in work documentation through use of Technology, Microsoft Office Applications, and other internet based programs.
    • Exceptional intercommunication skills, management, organization, planning, leadership and technical skills.
    • Outstanding ability to motivate and build relationships with students and their families to promote student success and strengthen community partnerships.


    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities assigned by the District. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    • Provide individual and group treatment as it relates to the support of identified student needs.
    • Provide therapeutic classroom support which may include observation of students and staff consultation.
    • Provide input for the development of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA)/ Behavior Improvement Plans (BIP) and Individualized Education Plans (IEP) as needed.
    • Provide family treatment/support services as needed to include, but not limited to: short-term family therapy, family liaison and home visits.
    • Provide crisis intervention to include, but not limited to: family and/or interagency involvement, Prevention and Behavioral Health, Division of Family Service, Division of Youth Rehabilitative Service, Family Court, other relevant public and private agencies.
    • Provide referrals to and collaborate with behavioral health agencies.
    • Participate as a member of school-based problem solving teams
    • Participate as a member of IEP and 504 teams, as appropriate
    • Serve as a liaison between families, students, community agencies and school.
    • Maintain accurate and confidential records of services provided.
    • Provide consultation and training to school staff on the provision of student support.
    • Provide families with guidance regarding support of student behavioral health needs.
