Position Title: Tribal Court Advocate

Department: Tribal Court

Supervisor: Tribal Court Administrator

Status: Regular, Full-time; Monday – Friday; 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Position Summary:

The Tribal Court Advocate will work under the direct supervision of the Court Administrator. The Tribal Court Advocate will be primarily assigned cases involving RSIC community adults and juveniles who have been accused of violating the laws of the Reno Sparks Indian Colony. Additionally, the Court may appoint the Advocate to represent the Reno Sparks Indian colony community residents who need representation in select and limited civil matters.

Duties:

  • Responsible for being available to promptly interview and investigate cases involving clients, including Juveniles, as directed and assigned by the Tribal Court Judge or his designee;
  • Be available to represent RSIC community resident and non-community members at all arraignments scheduled by the Tribal Judge;
  • Be available and prepared to represent all clients until each case has been adjudicated;
  • Be available for Tribal staff meeting as scheduled;
  • Prepare monthly reports indicating specific time spent on cases assigned, and report statistics of other duties and responsibilities as designated.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 21 years of age possess an educational background sufficient to effectively communicate legal concepts and skills in a Native American Tribal Court setting;
  • A familiarity with the various Native American customs and traditions as it effects the criminal justice system in a Native setting;
  • The ability, sincerity, and interest to effectively represent the RSIC community members in Court matters;
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct legal research;
  • The skills needed to maintain integrity and earn-the respect and goodwill of Native American members who are represented in Tribal Court;
  • Must possess a general knowledge-of criminal and civil procedures with a special emphasis on criminal and juvenile law representation in a Native American court setting;
  • Demonstrated skills in written and oral communication;
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • The ability to work with all Tribal residents at all times showing-courtesy, professionalism and respect to-all such residents;
  • The ability to provide community education on Law and Order issues, through individual or group meets as requested by the Chief Tribal Judge;
  • Not convicted of felony crimes. No misdemeanor convictions, the basis of which involves crimes of moral turpitude.

PLEASE NOTE: Hiring preference will be given to qualified tribal members of Reno-Sparks Indian Colony followed by members of other federally recognized tribes. Must pass and comply with the HR Policy 164.905- PL101.630. The Reno Sparks Indian Colony requires a designated candidate to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check, and confirmation of professional references and certifications.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $27.00 – $30.00 per hour
