The Michigan Works! Team is made up of dedicated professionals whose role is to develop the local workforce and build a talent pipeline to meet employers’ current and future needs in the area. At the same time, we are helping job seekers in our community find sustainable employment. Customers come to the One-Stop with many different skill levels and work with our specialists through coaching, scholarships for classroom training in high demand occupations, and on-the-job training opportunities. We work closely with our internal Business Team to connect jobseekers to multiple employment types from entry-level work to professional careers.


The primary job function of the Youth Talent Development Specialist is to coach and help develop skills for youth. Youth aged 14-24 work with their YTS to establish goals and critical skills through education, training, and career activities. Specialists operate under the activities and guidance of the Workforce Investment and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Youth program and services, as well as other guidance from program partners.


The Youth Talent Development Specialist is an essential employee within the overall function of the talent team. They will be responsible for creating lasting relationships within different teams throughout the organization to promote youth-related services and initiatives better and partner with the business team to identify potential paid and non-paid work opportunities that align with the youth being served.

  • Mentor youth through personal coaching, development of soft skills, barrier removal, various assessments, job leads, and ongoing support.
  • Identify and provide career coaching, including resume assistance, mock interviews, support services, training, and professional development to disadvantaged youth.
  • Work with local service providers and school systems to bring awareness of youth services and initiate referral services
  • Ongoing outreach and recruitment to seek potential youth for youth programs at Michigan Works!.
  • Administer and facilitate workshops and training both in-person and virtually
  • Perform timely data entry and maintain accurate participant files and perform monthly audits on each participant’s file.
  • Maintain continuous knowledge of current Michigan Works! services, high-demand sectors, and local employment opportunities
  • Effectively enroll and properly exit youth on your caseload.
  • Build and maintain lasting relationships with established partners whom we have an established memorandum of understanding.
  • Attend career and community fairs to gain resources and connect with community members.
  • Interact daily with internal and external partners to achieve successful outcomes in support of performance metrics and organizational vision, goals, and strategies.

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work or a related field or equivalent combination of training and/or experience working with at-risk youth.
  • Experience assessing individuals and considering their biological, psychological, and social issues (utilizing biopsychosocial approaches).
  • Knowledge of positive youth development strategies.
  • Ability to establish the appropriate boundaries while developing and nurturing supportive relationships with youth
  • Strong interpersonal skills. This person must be able to work with external organizations and agencies, requiring the ability to relate well with a wide range of people and values.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, including educating a variety of constituencies and interested parties our youth and services.
  • Must obtain strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of basic computer applications such as Microsoft Word Processing, Excel, Power Point, and virtual meeting platforms (ex: Google Hangout, Zoom).
  • Ability to proficiently use technology as a reporting tool.
  • Ability to work and thrive in a fast-paced, cross-functional team environment.


  • Must be able to lift to 25 pounds at times.
  • Must be willing and able to travel approximately 30% of the time between Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties.
